Triple-storey extension to accommodate Sixth Form

The Darwin Centre

King Edward VI Grammar School commissioned the practice to design a new sixth form centre. The three-storey building incorporates teaching space, learning resource facilties, and a social common room. This development is sited within the east quadrangle, and links to the existing historic buildings on three sides.

Prominently visible from beyond the school grounds, the south-facing gable includes covered balconies and reflects the scale of the original Victorian school. A palette of both traditional and contemporary materials has been used, including slate, brick, terracotta rain screen, and aluminium curtain walling.

The completed building was awarded the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Exellence Award 2010.
